Expand your knowledge of cooking and hone your culinary skills in The Silo Cooking School’s fully equipped professional Viking kitchen. The Silo’s staff will work with you as you fully participate and discover new and exciting menu ideas, use a wide array of kitchen tools and techniques, and experiment with recipes and flavors; all of which will inspire you to create wonderful entrées, desserts, and beyond!

This workshop is for children who enjoy moving and grooving to Hip Hop party music. Austin teaches kids about freestyle Hip Hop, party dance moves, break dancing, waving, robotics, line dances, Hip Hop and Breakdance vocabulary, and the history of the culture. This program encourages kids to dance, while building confidence and putting a smile on every face.

Have you ever played dress-up? Put on plays for your family at dinner? Imagine your ideas taking form in a real play, mentored by a real playwright. Natalie Bates will guide you through the steps necessary to turn your improvisations and ideas into a play. Collaborate with students from other schools to learn the four stages of writing a play. Discover how to construct a plot, write dialogue, and tell a story through action! Your play will be produced and performed by ASAP participants under the guidance of play director Emily Hubelbank.

Learn amazing tricks! In this fun-filled workshop, students will learn how to perform astonishing feats of magic that will astound friends and family. Students will build their own magic kit containing props and will also receive a Magic Wand! Instruction sheets are included in each session.

Students will learn the basics of Olympic Sport Fencing. They will be taught to wield three distinctive fencing swords: the foil, épée and saber. After completing these classes students will have a good understanding of each fencing sword and will be able to conduct basic fencing with each distinctive sword.

Explore a variety of rhythms and chants from around the world with award-winning Master Percussionist John Marshall. Using an assortment of percussion instruments including the West African djembe, North African dumbek and Afro-Cuban conga, you will learn traditional drumming patterns and create original arrangements that feature both solo and ensemble parts. Rhythms from the Middle East, Central Asia, Brazil, India, and the Caribbean will also be presented. On the final day of the class, family and friends are invited to join us for a concert in which we will incorporate and present class material.
Sing, Scat, Shout! with Sari Max

This workshop will encompass singer Sari Max’s vast repertoire of engaging songs and musical stories from around the world. Students will learn how to improvise new music, and the class will create an original piece together. In this workshop, you and your fellow cast members will perform a play written by participants of the Inter-district Playwriting Project, while working with the director to create and develop your own character for the production. You will get to make and paint every set and prop piece required for your show. Costumes will be designed and made by a professional costume designer!
Digital Photography with Donna Cloutier

This workshop will begin with an overview of the basic functions of a digital camera and basic photography techniques. Next, using lighting and creative composition, you’ll explore basic portraiture, abstract, close up, and still life studio photography. After downloading and selecting your favorite photo, you will mount and mat your fine art print! We prefer you to supply your own digital camera. Participants of this workshop are invited to submit a piece of their work to ASAP’s 2nd Annual Celebration of Young Photographers, which will culminate in a juried show by professional photographers.
Sculpting with Clay with Kezia Hearn

In this workshop, we will explore and experiment with different ways of working with clay including slab building, coil, and pinching to create our own unique sculptures. Using our fingers, clay tools, and everyday objects, we will shape and decorate our sculptures. We will also learn to use glazes to decorate our sculptures. Our projects will range from functional clay animal pots to tile relief sculptures to clay fish sculptures.

Native American Crafts and Culture with Institute for American Indian Studies (IAIS)

Join IAIS and discover the crafts, games, and stories that Native American children living in this area would have experienced over 500 years ago! During each class, IAIS educators will guide participants in a different craft as well as presenting either a traditional Native American game (like Sneak-Up or the Moccasin Game) or a traditional Native American legend. It’ll be like stepping back in time and having fun with history!
Animal Books with Terri Tibbatts

There is a long history of books about animals, called “Bestiaries”. Examples of some of these books will be shown to inspire young bookmakers and animal lovers. Each week we will create our own animal books using a wide variety of materials and techniques and will explore a different book structure that fits that animal or insect.
Grade 4 Inter-district Metamorphosis Project
Forbes and Region 12 Schools
ASAP is spearheading the Inter-district Metamorphosis Project with all fourth graders from Region 12 (Bridgewater, Roxbury, and Washington) and the Forbes School in Torrington. Together, with playwright Natalie Bates, The Weantinoge Heritage Land Trust (WHLT), and fourth grade staff, we will create a magical play that takes us into the wild and turns our classrooms into a landscape of learning adventures. Students will explore, research, and develop material along with expert ecologist Harry White from WHLT.
We will visit the Cobble Brook Vista Preserve in Kent for a hands-on experience to collect information on the lives of bugs, fish, birds, plants, and more, which we will then transform into living characters through movement and theatre. This remarkable project will metamorphose into a captivating play, which will be performed for primary school students and the public.
