2nd Annual Celebration of Young Photographers

2nd Annual Celebration of Young Photographers

Arethusa Farm, Litchfield (556 South Plains Road)

On December 1, we held our second annual Celebration of Young Photographers at Arethusa Farm in Litchfield.

Two hundred and fifty guests viewed artwork in the gallery, met Arethusa Farm’s prized cows, and shopped at the ASAP store for event merchandise and ASAP apparel. The artwork featured 58 photographs selected by a panel of judges from the 150 submitted photographs on this year’s theme: YOU + GREEN.

Photographs were submitted from 25 schools across the western Connecticut region and beyond. In its call for submissions, ASAP asked 3rd through 12th graders to think about what the word “green” means to them, how they impact the environment, and how the environment impacts them. Students were challenged to get out in the world with their cameras and express their interpretation of this theme through a single, unique image.

The judges were “blind” to the name, grade, school, and description submitted with each photograph. They saw only the photograph itself. Three finalists, one from each age group (grades 3-5, 6-8, and 9-12), were selected by the judges, and were each awarded a prize for excellence at the event. The finalists were: Anderson Warshaw, age 10, grade 5, Warren School; Katie Lecher, age 13, grade 8, Rumsey Hall School; and Emily Hersch, age 17, grade 12, The Spence School.

The group of judges included: Miki Duisterhof, Visko Hatfield, John Kane, Joseph Montebello, Rich Pomerantz, Jessica Rose, Kathryn McCarver Root, and Barbara Hyde Talbot.

Caterer Anne Gallagher arranged the food display, which featured cheeses from Arethusa Farm’s creamery, bread from Bantam Bread, and cookies from Hannah’s Bakery in Litchfield. Arethusa Farm ice cream and chocolate milk were also available to guests, as was apple cider from Averill Farm.

All images were archival prints made by Caesar’s Camera in Waterbury, with archival matting by Ella’s Limited in Bantam. Ella’s Limited used fully archival materials, including UV glass, and framed the three finalist prints. All images were for sale, including a silent auction for the three finalist images. All proceeds benefited ASAP.
